Want the best wedding shower party? Then follow these eight simple steps and you will be well on your way of hosing the party of the year.

Who should host the shower party?

Traditionally the maid of honour tends to plan the shower party. But today, anything goes and it is perfectly acceptable for both family and friends to work together to organize, host and share the cost of the wedding shower.

When to have your party

The bride and family members will already be busy preparing for the actual wedding. Therefore, it's best to have it quite far in advance of the wedding, usually about six weeks beforehand.

For this reason, it is important to let the bride know in advance of the date of the wedding shower. You could even make it through the day on a Sunday for afternoon tea or do a 'girly-lunch' through the week.

Who should get invited

Apart from your family members, the host should invite people you know well whether it be friends, relatives or work colleagues. You don't want to invite too many people, as a large group tends to split off in small separate groups.

You want everyone to interact with each other and be a manageable size for everybody to play the hilarious shower games and not feel left out. Taking all this into consideration, a comfortable shower should involve about 10-20 people.

Deciding on a theme

It's more fun to have a theme for your shower. It can be more fun than your wedding theme. Use this theme throughout the rest of your shower planning as outlined in this checklist.

A kitchen theme is always a good one as there are so many kitchen items and accessories to buy. Having said that there are dozens to pick and choose from.

It really shouldn't be that hard when deciding on a theme. You will know the bride well and know her likes and dislikes. Are they into fitness and health regimes? Then the option of a health/fitness theme could be adopted.

Food, favors, games and thank you cards

Food: It depends on the theme and location for which type of food to prepare. For example, if you are holding a 'wine tasting theme', then a finger buffet with crackers, nuts and other nibbles goes down well with wine.

Favors: If you want to keep the cost down, then favors aren't that necessary. Many guests don't expect favors at a shower as what they do at a wedding. However, if you really like the idea of giving away favors, then go for it!

Games: Brilliant for everyone to mingle in and have a good laugh. There's loads of games to choose from but the most popular is shower bingo and the silly 'memory game' where you have to remember what's in the bag!

Thank You Notes: Letting your guests know that you really appreciate what they have done, and for the gifts they have brought you is important. Sending each one a thank-you card is a great gesture to show your appreciation.
