Audiobooks are a great alternative for many people. An indispensable resource for the visually impaired, audiobooks are enjoying a wider audience -- from commuters who listen in the car, to busy students always on the go, to people who just don't have the time to sit down and read.

Audiobooks were once only recorded on cassettes, but new technology has emerged. Those popular portable MP3 players allow you to download audiobook files and carry them with you to the bus, the gym, or the line at the airport. Even if you have no time for reading, you can still catch up on the bestsellers everyone's talking about by listening to it during the daily commute.

It is important to note that listening to audiobooks can be distracting. Care should be taken while listening to books during activities that require a high degree of attentiveness, such as driving or operating machinery. The audiobook can always be rewound if a few minutes of the book are missed. A car accident can not be rewound.

Audiobooks can also be a great way to learn a new skill or language. Some things are easier to understand when you hear them spoken, so print books may not be the best choice for these instances. In other cases, a reader can listen to the audio file while reading along in the print book, making it easier to understand the content. This situation is ideal for someone who is just learning to read English.

From websites best known for selling traditional books, complete audiobooks can be easily downloaded to a computer, then to a listening device. Audiobooks often cost more than the paperback version of the same book, but usually less than the hardcover version. Audiobooks are also a great alternative for those with limited storage space, or those concerned about the environmental impact of paper products.

Visually impaired people continue to enjoy audiobooks because they provide access to literature which would otherwise be difficult to enjoy. However, a wide variety of people are utilizing this resource because it is often easier, more convenient, and more portable than traditional books.
