Bodybuilders get lots of benefits out of a photo shoot. Hard work can be seen to pay off in the glossy images, but more importantly, training progress and results can be observed in the photos.

If a change in exercise routine or diet is started, it is great to have photos from both before and after the change to see if results are as expected. Both athletes and trainers will see things in the photos that can be used as guides for improving problem areas.

Taking your own high quality bodybuilder photos is not hard if you follow these tips:

Prepare

The key element of a good photo is capturing muscle and nothing else.

* Shave most body hair before the shoot, or remove it with waxing or some other preferred method. Doing so gives the body a sleeker appearance.

* Avoid food intake prior to the photo shoot, as a full belly tends to distend and protrude.

* A quick but intense workout right before picture time will get the blood circulating and increase muscle volume.

* Highlight muscle curves and sinew with baby or cooking oil. A thin application of oil over the arms, legs and torso will give the body a polished look.

Pose

A good pose or series of poses will be the key element of a portfolio. The right pose will display the results of many hours of hard work by the athlete.

* Inhale deeply to pull in the stomach and show off the abdominals.

* Keep the spine straight or curved slightly back while standing to show a trim look.

* Tense the muscles in the arms, legs, chest, and stomach.

* If your subject can do all of this, while still holding a smile, the result will look more natural, in spite of being posed.

Cameras

Digital cameras are wonderful choices for those who like to do a lot of editing.

* Use your computer to edit the photos to improve the lighting effects, such as the contrast between muscle groups.

* Digital allows things such as red-eye to be easily removed. You can also correct lighting errors.

* A solid tripod will give you one less thing to worry about, and reduce the risk of blurry bodybuilding photos.

Light the Subject

* Proper contrast and shadowing are essential for a great picture.

* Lighting from above will produce shadows on the bottom parts of the muscle

* Lights from below will tend to highlight the lower abs, and slim down the chest muscles.

* Harsh light from flashes tends to flatten muscles, so use natural or bulb-based lighting instead.

For progress analysis, competitions or simply to flaunt those muscles, a great bodybuilder photo makes all the difference. Follow these basic rules for intelligent and interesting results.
