Cell Phones For Pre-Teens?

Should your preteen have a cell phone is one of the great debates among parents and them. If you go by what the cell phone companies say, every child should have a cell phone. But, don't forget it means business to them. They make money by convincing every parent and child about the importance of cell phones. They don't mind painting gory pictures of how things can go wrong if you don't have one. And, yet, two decades ago life was quite the same when cell phones were not even invented.

Some cities, such as New York, the schools have addressed the problem by banning cell phones from all classes. Some parents didn't agree with this idea and actually held protests stating that their children should be able to contact them at all times just in case they were needed. What do you think about it?

Gone are the days when cell phones were used for emergency purposes only. They have almost completely replaced regular landlines. However, only parents can decide whether their kids need a phone or not.

You do need to understand how cell phones are used. They are not just used to make calls. Many are very advanced communications devices. You can take photos, play music on them, send text messages to other people, they really are not as much phones as small portable computers.

Does your teen need all these capabilities? While they would think they do need all the perks, for their age, they probably only need a cell phone to use in case of an emergency. One way to gauge if they can handle it is to mention it should only be for emergencies and see how they react.

While considering purchasing your pre-teen a cell phone, bear in mind the costs involved. Perhaps it would be better bundled in with your family plan. Most will allow you to add additional phones and choose how many minutes of usage are allowed. Stick with the basics and don't worry about the extras like voice mail and call display.

Parents are dependent on cell phones these days. So it is not easy for them to tell their preteen son or daughter not to use one. So you might as well accept the fact that you have to allow them to use cell phones.
