Adding just a single tree to a garden can make a world of difference. Trees can help add dimension to any garden. When choosing which trees to grow in your garden you really need to take a look around your local area and see what trees grow best (this one tip could save great heartache). See how they have been used in the garden and make notes of the plants around it so that you can emulate it in your own space. If you have such a small space as you will be limited to planting only one tree you will need to spend a little longer deciding which is your favorite that are suitable for your location.

The most beautiful trees in the garden are usually specimen trees, those types that have good looking blossom or blossom that is sweet smelling. There are other reasons why a tree may be suitable as a specimen tree such as those that bear fruit or those with some kind of architectural qualities such as the corkscrew hazel or a monkey puzzle tree.

If you have enough space to grow more than one tree then you can use them in a number of ways. Of course you can always place a specimen tree at the very center of your yard or garden but, by being a little more adventurous, trees can add extra depth to even the smallest space. Unfortunately if we only have a small space in which to create a garden then we really do need to use our imagination. Some folk choose to create a garden in absolute miniature, others use containers, it really depends on how small the place is. Try to hide sharp corners with a soft tree or shrub. Create extra height towards the rear of the garden by placing thin tall trees and climbers along your back wall. Try to be imaginative.

Sadly there are not that many trees that are suitable for growing in small spaces as most grow to an enormous size. Luckily there are some really special trees that are superb and it is far better to spend a little extra on one specimen tree rather than purchasing two rather plain ones.

There are basically two types of trees, those that keep their leaves in the winter (evergreen) and those that lose/drop them (deciduous). Of course each type has it's advantages and disadvantages.

Evergreen trees are great for providing color in the garden when there is virtually none. However the colors available are rather limited to various shades of green with the occasional blonde or golden variety. Evergreens can also appear rather boring as they change little throughout the year though pine cones do look great when they appear.

Deciduous trees can look rather bare in the winter months, although icicles and frost add interest. Trees such as the corkscrew willow can look wonderful in the winter but only in the architectural sense and no color. The real advantage of deciduous trees is their diversity. There is a multitude of species that offer the most incredible blossoms such as the laburnum (which is highly suitable for growing in small spaces if kept under control) or the flowering cherry. However the down side is that, when the leaves drop, they make a terrible mess!

When choosing trees to grow in small spaces such as a backyard it is important to ensure that the species chosen does not grow to an enormous size. This may sound obvious but to judge the suitable size correctly you need to take stock of the surroundings. If you have low hanging telephone or power cables you should should choose a tree that will not grow to reach them. Consider the roots of trees, the roots can spread great distances and are so powerful that they can cause severe damage to the foundations of buildings. Also consider the amount of shade a tree will create. It may look great in your garden but if it blocks the light from a neighbors window there could be trouble ahead.

There are a number of dogwoods that are highly suitable for growing in small places such as the Coralbark dogwood (Cornus seicea 'Cardinal') which, as the name suggests, has the most interesting bark that will add great interest to any garden or yard. Maples can also be splendid in small spaces especially the Japanese maples which tend to grow much smaller. There are a number of cultivars available that offer incredibly colored foliage that changes throughout the year. There are plenty more trees to choose from including a great many dwarf and miniature varieties and some of the dwarf conifers are incredibly small and slow growing. Just pop along to a nursery to see what grows best in your area.
