Embroidery, in one form or another, has been around for many years and has shown up in different forms throughout history. Today, embroidery is a very popular pass time and people from all walks of life enjoy doing a little needlework. Many people who aren't heavily into embroidery have no idea of the many different aspects and advancements embroidery has taken over the past several years.

Embroidery is basically adding colorful threads to fabric in order to create a design. If you purchase an item of clothing embellished with embroidery it was probably done by a machine, as embroidery can take a very long time to do by hand. Most embroidery is done with the help of a pattern, although there are many people who can do it without.

Embroidery is a relatively inexpensive hobby as the patterns, thread, and needles don't cost very much. It's fun and creative to add some color and design to clothing, tablecloths, napkins, blankets, and virtually any fabric, without going into debt. Patterns are easy to find as well. There are hundreds of websites offering patterns; some you can mail order and others you can just print from your home computer.

Some sewing machines that are coming out now can actually do embroidery, although very simple designs. You can even buy software that tells the needle exactly where to go and how to create your beautiful embroidery designs. However, most people who are into embroidery as a hobby would much rather do it by hand. This gives you a much greater sense of satisfaction than if a machine did everything for you.

If you interested in getting into embroidery but aren't sure where to start, you may be able to find a class at your local community college that can help you understand the basics. They will probably take you through a few simple designs and patterns. Once you understand how to read the pattern and do the stitching, you can pretty much tackle any design you're interested in.

There are also many embroidery conventions and craft fairs throughout the country. Check out on of the many embroidery websites available on the Internet, they often have links to local events coming up. You can also find links to hundreds of sites offering free embroidery patterns, or patterns for discounted prices.

There are many embroidery magazines that you can subscribe to which may help you get started as well. These magazines offer helpful tips and hints, as well as different patterns each month with step-by-step instructions. They also focus on what needles and different types of thread you'll need. These magazines are a great way to stay on top of upcoming events and give you great ideas for your next project, especially for seasonal ideas.

People have loved embroidery for centuries. It is fulfilling as an artistic outlet both for the stitching and for the designs you can create. If you aren't an especially creative person, all you need to do is follow the simple instructions. Before you know it you'll be making beautiful and unique designs.
