Interpreters into Russian are often heard say that proper names are often simply given letter by letter rather than translated from English. It may even be seen in reality. And yet, there are quite a few proper namesdo not seem to fit the general pattern.

An instance are word combinations thatconsist of a proper name and there are also common words. Here we mean eponymic vocabulary. Before we go into this question of eponymics any further, let us analyze a bit and find the notion of the word eponym and its derivatives in linguistics. All words inboth English and Russian can be segmented into two separate subdivisions: proper names and appellatives. If you understand ancient Greek, you may know that the lexical unit “eponym” means “naming” or “giving the name”. In theearly days of history eponyms came into existence from the names of real people, heroes or gods to be later used in the names of towns, local communities, objects and even positions of power. In the period of a couple of centuries, the notion of “eponym” grew wider to include not only the personal name, but also other objects that shared some metaphorical similiarity.

Currently, students of linguistics employ the term “eponym” to refer to a word that has stopped working as a proper name and now works as a simple regular noun. Thus, we work with three notions of an eponym:

1. an entity or an object

2. proper name

3. regular word.

When an interpreter works with an English text, they should assume the background knowledge of the audience for which the English text was intended and the level of competence of the Russian reader. The meaning of eponymism is created on stereotypical mental connections that deal with a concrete, certain eponym and having the nature of encyclopedic connotation. As Russian and English languages have dissimilar cultural past, there are non-similar ways in which proper namesturn into eponyms. Cultural awareness of an audience explains the level of clarity of an eponym. In that case there is a question: should the Russian translator consider such problems? Surely such eponymisms as lolita "a sexually attractive young girl" or a superman “a man with exceptional physical or mental ability, with strong integrity" are etymologically understandable both to English and to Russian speakers so performing Russian translation of them does not lead to any issues.

If there is no clear understanding of the connotation among the people from the two cultures, then all the same the job of a translator is a no brainer. (e.g.: Adonis named after a lovely young man loved by both Aphrodite and Persephone and killed by a boar, or the game of badminton named after Badminton in SW England, country seat of the Duke of Beaufort, where it was played). There is a problem only when an eponym is understandable to native English speakers, but means absolutely nothing to the Russian language speaker. However, not every eponym leads to troubles. There are a number of eponyms that are quite transparent to see through.
