Personal lubricants are specialized lubricants that serve a variety of different purposes and are used in many different situations. There are basically three different times that one would employ a personal lubricant: for medical reasons, during sexual intercourse and with masturbation.

It may be surprising to hear, but some of the personal lubricants that are used today were originally developed solely for medical purposes. Products like KY Jelly, Astroglide or Probe personal lubricants were manufactured for use by physicians in the medical field. Some procedures that these are still used for are gynecological exams, digital rectal exams, and in the use of enema nozzles and rectal thermometers. Physicians today continue to use these products to put their patients in a more comfortable and relaxed state. Some of the procedures can be very tense and scary for people, so the addition of a personal lubricant helps to relax these areas so it is easier to enter.

Probably the most common reason that someone uses personal lubricants is for sexual intercourse. A lubricant should often time be the very first thing you do before having sexual intercourse with your partner. Personal lubricants help to increase pleasure or reduce pain during sexual activity. This comes in very handy during a variety of different sexual activities that include the penis, a dildo, vagina or anus. The most common type of sexual intercourse that almost always requires a lubricant is anal sex. Anal sex usually refers to the insertion of an erect penis in the anal cavity for sexual pleasure, but some people fail to realize that the anus and rectum areas are not self lubricating.

If you do not know what you are doing and choose not to use a personal lubricant, then this sexual activity can be very painful. Anal sex is a very sensitive activity because that area of the body is incredibly delicate. It is very sensitive to any type of dry friction and the skin in that area can be torn very easily. This is why it is almost mandatory to use some type of personal lubricant or else you run the risk of causing your body some serious discomfort. Also, if you do experience a tear in your anus or rectum, be sure to see a doctor immediately because it can cause an infection if you do not take care of it.

Personal lubricants are unparalleled for any type of sexual activity you may be thinking about. So, next time you are considering trying something new with your partner be sure to visit your local store to pick up some lubricant.
