There can be no second opinion that a family life is the best life to lead. The man, the woman, and their children make a wonderful family. A loving couple can lead a happy and joyous married life with their children. However, the whole family set up is shaken when infidelity occurs in a family.

What is infidelity? It is a violation of the mutually agreed-upon rules of a relationship and a breach of faith in an inter-personal relationship. We often mean infidelity to sexual infidelity in marriage. It may be called as adultery or cheating. Infidelity can cause total damage to the family.

Impacts of infidelity are damaging, often to the point of being irreparable. The man or woman who stumbles upon their partner's unfaithfulness often feels angry, rejected, shocked, disappointed, and physical or emotional pain. They may find it very difficult to appropriately cope with the discovery.

Often, the first reaction of the affected partner is to terminate the marriage because they find it difficult to forgive the cheating partner. Sometimes women may try to forgive their unfaithful husbands due to a deep love for them or if the husband shows he is truly sorry for his actions. Women may wish for a second chance to live a faithful life with their husband.

Sometimes, however, the wounds from an illicit affair can run so deep that it can destroy a relationship. The affected partner may opt for separation or divorce, thereby breaking up the family and causing severe suffering for all members. Sadly, children who have had nothing to do with the incident are swept up in the after-effects.

Family harmony becomes non-existent as frequent quarrels between spouses occur, sometimes escalating beyond emotional wounding to physical assault. Children who must live in this environment feel deep emotional pain and insecurity when they experience an intense fight between their parents.

Obviously children are the innocent victims of infidelity. Children simply want to live with their parents, in the same house, in peace. Emotionally, they need both parents. When the couple divorces or separates, children are effected psychologically and may manifest signs of anxiety and insecurity.

The effects of infidelity on family are very large. The husband and wife may start to live separately: children have to live with either the father or the mother. They will miss a parent and the love given by him/her. A life without both the parents is not a complete one for the children especially when they are young. The separation brings a bad name for the couple in the society as well.
