Powering Up Your Home or Office with Diesel Generators

When you think of diesel fuel, what instantly comes to mind? Diesel-engine cars. Nowadays, these cars are becoming popular because of skyrocketing gas prices. However, diesel fuel is not only used in cars. In fact, it has lots of other applications. One device that uses diesel fuel is a diesel generator, which is used all around the world, usually as an emergency power supply.

Basically, a diesel generator is an electrical generator and a diesel engine combined. Diesel generators are used for two main purposes. One purpose is to provide power as a regular source of electricity, while the other purpose is to act as an emergency power supply.

Diesel generators can be regular sources of electricity for power. They are commonly used in areas that are not connected to nearby power grids. These generators can produce as much as 2000 kVA of electricity. When used in power plants, these generators are usually grouped together in parallel to generate enough electricity for the facility. Most generator-based power plants have three to six diesel generators working together to produce power.

Diesel generators also serve as emergency power supplies. These generators are typically smaller compared to power plant diesel generators. Portable diesel generators can give out between 1kVA to 10kVA of electricity, while the larger ones used in offices and homes have a capacity of between 8kVA to 30kVA.

Not only are diesel generators becoming more common, but new uses are being developed for them too. In ships, for example, diesel generators are used for propulsion and for powering the ship with electricity. Since the generators do not need to be near the propellers and can be placed at a distance, they have given ships more flexibility and greater use of their space.
