Different names for loss of memory are amnesia and dementia. One of our biggest fears as we age is losing our mind power, and the inability handle family members who are suffering from such memory loss. Short term memory loss can be caused by stroke, circulation, Alzheimer’s as well as poor conductivity in our mind. However, take heart that memory loss is not permanent and can be worked on or prevented.

What is Short Term Memory?
Short-term memory refers to memories which exists for a while, and have gone through some sort of processing by our brain. It is most of the time just made of limited capacity, and learning new information causes the older information to be “forgotten”. Making an effort to talk with those who have short term memory loss can be very frustrating.

Avoiding Short Term Memory Loss

1. Our short term memory can be enhanced by rehearsal: e.g. through constant repetition of the information.

2. Repetition may also improve the probability that things in the short-term memory will move into permanent storage in long-term memory.

3. Mental and physical exercises, the kind of food we intake and nutritional supplements can aidin avoiding short term memory loss.

4. Your body needs to have sufficient sleep in order to create links and connections in your memory. Hence, a minimum of 8 hours of sleep daily is recommended.

5. Your vision is an wonderful resource for boosting your memory, with roughly 40% of the brain devoted to it. This is more than any other function of the brain!

6. Have frequent appointments with you doctor for blood tests, as they can indicate possible ailments and can allow your doctor to provide a cure through medications.

7. When our brain is deprived of the blood it needs, your ability to recall will be terribly affected. Reduce you intake of triglycerides and cholesterol in your blood, as these act as blockers.

8. In order to maintain the health of your mind, your brain needs nutrients such as folic acid and vitamins B6 and B12. These aid the neurotransmitters in your brain that allows you to pass on signals and information to where they should be.

These are 8 simply tips to avoiding short term memory loss. Do bear in mind that although aging affects memory loss, other factors such as health issues, alcohol and drug usage, smoking, and environmental toxins play an important part as well.
