Our new found god, ‘science’ is destined to lead us into an unimaginable paradise of self driven sustenance where death and hunger will exist no more. Role of Research & Development (R&D) in Today’s Society

The process of scientific development and rational growth that started by kicks and jerks in the first quarter of the last century is now hurtling into the direction of a promising future at an exponential rate. Things though being basically the same are reinventing themselves to meet the contemporary human expectations. Entertainment which was confined to bulky radios and TV sets now comes as satellite channels and plasma screens. Agricultural productivity, which relied on the expectations of a good rain, is now barging into the frontiers of genetic engineering and biotechnology. Defense strategies supported by archaic weaponry and clumsy aircrafts have now evolved into the latest concept of smart weapons and stealth technology. Though purposes are inherently the same, means have metamorphosized into an unbelievable digital fairy tale.

With the opening of new markets in the former communist block and third world countries, all the obsolete products have migrated to this new consumer heaven. Customers in the contemporary Western Society are getting more choosy and sophisticated in their expectations. Companies are vying with each other to secure a major stake in the market. Survival amidst such competition depends upon a firm’s ability to come out with new range of products and services offering never before features. Economies are desperately in need of exhaustive R&D facilities to barge into the arena of space age consumerism.

This novel road show can only be carried on by perpetual research and development in all the spheres of human existence. The vision we have rubbed deep into the mass consciousness can only be achieved by the efforts and toil of self motivated R&D technicians and scientists. The limited resources of our planet have been stretched to their limit. Now what is making things work is the rock hard faith in the potential of existing research activities. Interpreted in this context, every business is basically an R&D effort.

This spurt in the R&D effort in the last decade has been made possible by a revolution in the information technology. All the major research inputs and outputs can be summarized to one word that is DATA. R&D effort relies on digital gadgets not only for its storage needs, but all the newly developed technologies are planned and tested in a virtual environment. You will be surprised to know that today even nuclear tests can be carried out on computer monitors with an ability to gather accurate impact data. Super fast computing ability and unlimited storage and backup is the need of the hour. The development of new technologies not only demands inputs in terms of data but they are also fine tuned in computer supported virtually simulated systems. Thus R&D and IT are mutually supporting and leveraging each other.

Effect of Data Loss in R&D Facilities

The problem is that R&D is a cash guzzling activity. It has become a specialty in itself and is being pursued by cash rich corporate concerns, backed by major financial institutions. Any data loss disaster in an R&D facility can not only slow down or wipe away an entire research project, but the resulting losses can bankrupt the related companies and investors forever. In the contemporary environment marred by industrial espionage, hacking, malware attacks, organized crime and natural and man made disasters, R&D facilities are vulnerable to data loss calamities like never before.

What to do in case of a Data loss

If an R&D company comes across a data disaster, chances are that most of the mission critical data must be safely backed up to help restore the computer systems.
