The cost of power to run our homes seems to go up each year and often well above average inflation. There are a number of reasons for this we are told. For instance, privatization of many utilities companies has increased the need to make a profit. This may be part of the reason why oil, electricity and gas prices have been going up.

However, the companies themselves are at pains to point out that the real reason for increases is that the fuel used is becoming scarce. Coal, oil and gas are resources that are used by power stations to create electricity or are supplied directly to homes. All of these resources are finite and the more they get used the harder they become to find and extract. All these extra costs have to be passed on to the consumer by the utility companies.

Within this context and partly because fossil fuels are thought to contribute to environmental change, people are keen to find alternatives to traditional energy resources. Solar power has been around for many years and is becoming a viable alternative to fossil fuels for generating power to the home. This article will cover how to run a house on solar power.

So, you can run a house using the sun's thermal energy. The best application of this is to heat water that can be used in the home (or even a swimming pool).

The way this works is by exposing a metal surface to the Sun. The metal plate will absorb the heat and become hot. This process can be made more efficient if the metal surface is painted black and the areas that do not come into contact with the Sun are insulated to prevent the heat escaping.

When you allow water to come into contact with this hot plate the heat is transferred to the water. Thus you have hot water. This can be connected the plumbing of your home and used as a water source. In some cases it may not be hot enough for use and can still be connected to the standard water heater.

Energy used to heat household water is one of the most expensive items on most utility bills. This could be reduced if a solar water heating system is installed.

We can also utilize sunlight to create electricity. This is a more recent development in solar power technology and is known as photovoltaics. Cells made of a silicon semi-conductor react to photons in sunlight. The reaction causes an electron to be thrown loose. The flow of electrons can be controlled using an electric field. This can create a current of electricity. The more photovoltaic cells that are connected the greater the voltage and current that can be produced.

This is direct current (DC) that can be stored in a battery. It can also be converted to Alternating current with the aid of a power inverter. AC can be used to transport electricity or, more importantly, used to power the home.

The solar panels that you see on the roof of many houses are a number of PV cells connected together in a series or parallel configuration to increase the amount of electricity that can be produced.

Most people will start using solar panels as part of their existing grid supplied electricity. They are essentially joint venturing with the utility company. All the solar electricity that they create is sent to the utility company and this is deducted from their total bill at the end of the quarter.

The advantage of being connected to the grid is that if there is no Sun then you can use the grid electricity. There is less responsibility on the homeowner which can suit people new to solar power.

The next step is to go off the grid completely. This is more responsibility for the individual and more knowledge of the system is needed. They will also need a back up energy generation system should there be any problems.
