We all want our kids to be independent and at the same time help us with the chores at home. But before the kids start helping us around in the kitchen and learn a thing or two about cooking, they should be aware of all the basic precautions so that they stay healthy even if they are living and cooking alone.

Children must understand the concept of cleanliness first and foremost. They should be taught about what all bad things can happen if they don't maintain hygiene Kids should understand that why during cooking they should not lick their fingers, wash hands properly, not mix the cooked and the raw food etc. They must also be taught why it is important to heat certain food items to a particular temperature. All these small things will go a long way in keeping them healthy when they decide to face the battles of life all alone.

Discuss the entire recipe with the kids before you all start cooking. This will ensure that you don't miss out on anything and that all the ingredients are in place and the entire cooking process goes on smoothly. Try to stick to the exact procedure for the best results.

While telling the kids recipes, also tell them why and how a particular appliance is used. In case of electrical appliances, teach them how to save electricity by turning them off when not in use and how to protect themselves against electric shock by always keeping your hands dry and wearing bathroom slippers or shoes.

Teach the kids why hot pads are important in the kitchen. It is also important for them to understand why they should not taste food from a hot spoon or put a finger in hot food. Kids must understand that at all times they should take maximum precaution so as to protect themselves from any kind of burn injury. Kids should also be taught how to remove hot trays in from the oven and also what to do in case of a burn injury in the kitchen.

Keep your knives in brand new condition all the time. The kids should also be taught to use the knife properly and safely. A knife is as useful as it is dangerous in the kitchen. The kids should be taught to never put the knives in soap water to avoid anyone getting cut while doing the dishes.

The kids must be taught never to throw water at the kitchen flame and should always remember to call adults or 911 in case of an emergency.

Most of us taste the food even when it is not fully cooked to see if everything's perfect. But this is a wrong habit and should be discouraged so that you or the kids don't spoil your stomach. Tell the kids that if you have to taste the food, then use a clean and fresh spoon and use it only once. Use another spoon if you wish to taste the food again so that you don't pass on any contamination to the food.

Use the time in between the cooking processes to do the dishes or to clean the kitchen surface to avoid the cockroaches and rodents. Switch off any unused appliance in the kitchen in this time.

Ensure that your kids see you working in the kitchen from an early age so that they also learn the habit of good cooking and good house (and of course kitchen) keeping.
