Totally Freezing at the Casino

My first ever ‘proper’ live game - have played countless home games, with moderate success, but always considered myself a ‘thinker’ of a poker player suited to larger tournaments.

I proved myself wrong.

I completely froze, just couldn’t get involved in the game and ended up 56th out of 72, going losing on a decent (ish) flush draw as the rebuy period ended.

So what happened? I am not entirely sure.

I got the cards I wanted, but not the position, I guess.

I had told myself I wanted absolutely nothing for 20 minutes, but was dealt KK first up, raised to 4 x BB and was called by two players, flop came AA9 rainbow and we checked round - I folded after the turn (4h) to a pot sized bet that screamed ‘I have an ace and a good kicker’. Probably should have bet the flop.

Two hands later I found AJ diamonds, called a 3 x BB raise, and flop was J88 rainbow. Bet the pot and was quickly called, and again folded on the turn (5 or 6, don’t remember) to a big bet, fearing the set. Hand winner turned over AJ spades after, split pot if I had stayed in.

Into stunned silence I went for 30 minutes or so, picking up again on pocket 5s, raising to 4 x BB and being called by 3 players, flop was low, and I called a half-pot bet with one overcard on the board, but folded on the turn (Ah) to a half pot-sized raise. River came a 5. Another might have been.

I guess it was a game of might have beens - action was pretty quick, and with the 90 minute rebuy period play was looser than a rebel nun, hardly won a hand and didn’t impose myself on the game.

Eventually got fed up and went all-in on the last hand of the rebuy period, 3-handed with JT clubs and flopped two more, but missed the flush that would have put me right into the thick of it.

So, all in all, disappointed. Going back on Thursday for my second foray into proper poker with a plan in mind to sit back, relax, and THINK a bit more, let the hands come to me. Definitely played too much, too early - another chap at my table can’t have played 5 hands during the rebuy period, and was sitting on 3 times his starting stack at the end of it.
