If you are looking at a career in health care you will want to know what medical assistant duties might include. It of course depends on what area of medicine you are working in.

Medical assistant duties range from welcoming patients to doctor's practices to giving injections and even to some filing of documentation.

A medical assistant working at a dental clinic will have to prepare the equipment that the dentist will need, sterilizing the equipment before each appointment and assisting the dentist with whatever needs to be done. Dental assistants also organize appointments and handle patient documentation.

Administrative duties are a part of the job at pediatric facilities. You might also be asked to give needles, or even research information on various medical issues. Filing is of course always a necessary part of the job, whether using paper files or arranging files on the computer.

In some settings medical assistants work in the lab. They may process blood samples or run tests to find out what might be wrong with the patients. There are some potential health risks in this kind of work and it is important not to get contaminated by the samples and follow all necessary safety procedures without exception.

If you are not really excited about working in the hospital environment or around ill people, you can opt to be a medical transcriptionist that you can do online in the comfort of your home. A transcriptionist types out a doctor's notes or instructions from an audio source so they can form part of the patient record.

Ophthalmologists' assistants may be required to perform eye tests and instruct patients about proper contact lenses and glasses care. Other duties may include applying medications and preparing dressings. Assistants also take care of the equipment to keep it in good working order.

For more complex diseases that are hard to diagnose, medical assistants often help doctors conduct the research necessary for an accurate diagnosis. They search through both written and online literature and also help doctors collect blood and tissue samples from patients.

Medical assistants are responsible for the smooth operation of a clinic or hospital, and this includes organizing patient information, managing appointments and caring for medical equipment. They also dispense medicine to patients and instruct them on the consumption of medicines.

If you get yourself certified by the American Association of Medical Assistants, you will have a better understanding of what is involved in being a medical assistant and be more likely to land a job. A good knowledge of medical assistant duties will make you prepared for what you can expect in your new job and will help you enjoy your position.
