A famous remark made by the Frenchman Brillat Savarin after the famous defeat of Napoleon and the French army at the battle of Waterloo was " The fate of a Nation and it's people depends on how it is fed"

He noticed how the might of the once great French army had crumbled in the hands of the now grossly overweight pauchy Napoleon who could barely get on his horse. This the same Napoleon who was once the envy of all men and lusted after by many beautiful women.He went from athletic, charismatic and handsome hero to an object of ridicule and derission.. He had effectively eaten himself from power.

Despite the fact Napoleon ultimately stood down from power he saw in the end it was a result of his excessive and obsesive eating. Such that Napoleon wrote a now famous paper called Obesity in which he attempted to teach his fellow men and women about the serious consequences of obesity and how it was capable of destroying lives . It had his, and to this day it continues to do so across America and beyond.

What he did like many before him was to try and educate people to eat only enough to maintain their beautiful bodies in peak physical condition. But inspite of his attempts and those that have followed the vast majority of people still choose to be fat and overweight.

Surely people wouldn't choose to be fat, I am convinced no one would be happy to be fat if they were honest would they?

Why would you want to be fat? Isn't it the fat kids who are the butt of everyones jokes at school and have you noticed that the only fat people who get roles in movies get fun made out of them? How many famous fat people do you know ...not many i'm guessing.

What is it that forces us to sit down to eat all manner of foods whether they be baked,fried, boiled roasted or prepared in other ways to make ourselves fat. It's simple really we love food and love to eat . But we need to eat to survive don't we?

But do you know something the worse part is the food we love eating most is the food which provides us the least benefit and causes us the most harm.How many people say but I only have the odd burger now and again, or I only eat the odd plate of fries or a pizza when I get home late.

It's some sort of strange world we live in when we condem those who choose to smoke. We condem that they put a strain on our health resources and are totally selfish caring only about their own welfare. We even pass laws to prevent these people doing themselves too much harm. But when food becomes involved we just shrug and ignore the problem.

Wev'e all seen people pushing food desperately in to their mouths as they walk down the street almost as if they would starve before they got home there lives depending on it.

The truth is they probably do but not how they are thinking as they continue to eat.

It might shock you somewhat that I'm so blunt and maybe a bit over the top on my radical views of obesity, why would anything I had to say be worth listening to. But ask yourself this did the message get through?

Does the softly softly approach work for you? Of course it doesn't if it had you wouldn't be reading this article about obesity in the first place. Does all that junk you are being fed by the media make you want to jump in to Lycra and start exercising. No way you'd no more walk over broken glass but the strange thing is you haven't always been fat have you. When you were born you were pretty much the same as everyone else give or take a few pounds.But some how while you were sleeping you got to be fat and overweight what happend?

But food is just one small part of the equation yes it's important but not everything which is why so many diet programs have failed before they start. It's how you want to think , how you think you look, what makes you feel good and bad and why, it how you eat, what you cook and even the way you dress all of these factors and many more all matter.

There so much more to looking good and controlling your body and self image than just eating a bowl of museli for breakfast or taking some magic pill to stop you feeling hungry.It's much more than all that it's about your inner and outer beauty , it's about your romance , it's about sex , it's about your health and ultimately it's about you.
